Pokemon is a great cartoon series from Japan based on a game. Our entire family has enjoyed this show for years. It is full of humor, more Pokemon than you can count, and the wonderful Japanese manga art style. The characters are consistent, although my older children insist that the voice actors were better before they got re-cast a couple of years ago. Despite these criticisms, they all still enjoy watching the shows and the movie spin-offs of this delightful series. We loved the theme song of the original series that listed all 150 Pokemon. It was a challenge we all undertook to try and keep up and recite them all. As the show's theme says, "Gotta catch 'em all!"

Pokemon follows the adventures of Ash Ketchum and his friends Misty and Brock as they travel the country learning to become Pokemon trainers. Pokemon (literally "Pocket Monsters" in Japanese) are a wide variety of little critters who inhabit this country. They inhabit the water, the land, underground, the air and just about anywhere you can think of. These Pokemon also come in many varieties. Pikachu, the primary Pokemon character in the show, for instance is an electric Pokemon. Other varieties include psychic, plant, fire, ground, bug, dark, dragon, fighting, water, flying, ghost, grass, ice, normal, poison, rock, and steel. The Pokemon evolve into more advanced forms depending on experience points or if they are near a specific tool that helps them to change.

Pokemon trainers try to catch more Pokemon (there are 493 different species now… when the series first started there were only 150) and they battle them in tournaments held in the major cities. Each Pokemon has attacks they can do that relate to the type of Pokemon they are. Ash is constantly hounded by the hilarious Team Rocket (Jessie and James) who keep trying to steal Pikachu.

Pokemon first aired in the US on September 8, 1998. The show and all the related games and merchandise are owned by Nintendo.

Ash is the hero of the show, and it is his adventures we follow throughout the series. He is a ten year old boy seeking to become the greatest Pokemon trainer ever. He was played first by Veronica Taylor, and is now played by Sarah Natochenny. His girl-watching friend Brock was first voiced by Eric Stuart, but is currently played by Bill Rogers. They also voice James of Team Rocket. Misty, the conscience of the group, was first portrayed by Rachael Lillis, and then by Michele Knotz. These actresses also voice the character of Jessie of Team Rocket. Many of the voice actors portray more than one character. This is a common practice in animated shows.

Animeworld.com says of the show, " Those cute little Pokemon took over Japan and then set their sights on North America. Were they successful? Well, in case you've been living under a rock with your ears plugged, I'll say this. The first line of the second TV opening rings very true to North America: 'We all live in a Pokemon world.' "
